You’ve been struggling with a difficult issue such as anxiety or a difficult relationship forever. You’ve made a sincere effort and done plenty of therapy and it just continues to plague you. Sometimes the roots of our issues are apparent and easy to access by an observant friend or a skilled therapist. Yet, other issues have roots that go beyond our reach. We might shuffle the symptoms but have not been able to identify or deal with the cause. The mind is complex with many layers. Most of the problems that plague us do not reside or originate in the conscious mind. In fact, they stem from much, much deeper in the deepest recesses of our consciousness.
This is why normal talking therapy is not always effective in helping us eliminate our suffering. There are many therapeutic approaches that help us gain access to the roots of our issues. Techniques like breathwork help us open up the field of our consciousness bringing to the forefront emotional wounds, beliefs, and attitudes that are wreaking havoc from the deepest places in our consciousness.
This can be very gentle and bring deep insights, free up the energy that has been blocked around the wounds along with defense mechanisms we inadvertently create in order to help us survive the pain.
Past-life regression therapy, based on the internationally renowned work of Dr. Brian Weiss and Carole Weiss is yet another very effective therapeutic approach. Done in person or online, this work can bring to the forefront and liberate negative patterns that keep us bound and stop us from achieving our full potential.
Jennifer is an avid student of yoga and has been steeped in the teachings of the East since adolescence. She recently consulted me because, in spite of living a very fulfilling and interesting life, she was plagued by feelings of powerlessness and frustration. I helped Jennifer reach a deep state of focused relaxation otherwise known as hypnosis. In this state, which is ideal for deep, therapeutic work, the client feels safe, relaxed and completely lucid. I gently walked Jennifer back into her past, suggesting that she become aware of the time and place in which her feelings of frustration and powerlessness started. She saw herself as an Indian woman. Her life was very basic. Living in a remote village in a patriarchal society, Jennifer had no freedom of self-expression. Her dreams and visions went unfulfilled as she was confined to the roles of wife and mother. As she relived this vivid scene, she became aware of just how much the emotional patterns of powerlessness and frustration from that lifetime were still affecting her current life. Somehow just this awareness led to a profound feeling of shift. She felt much lighter as if the burden was lifted. When Jennifer came for her next session a week later, she reported not once having felt the feelings of frustration or powerlessness. Six months down the line, she is still feeling free and light.
