When I began my psychotherapy practice fresh out of college, the predominant approach was to figure out what was wrong and fix it. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to understand why that arduous approach was making us more isolated, neurotic and self-centered. How long have you been pummeling yourself in your most painful and vulnerable areas? Have you advanced by as much as a millimeter? Fortunately, we now realize that when we are in the depths of suffering and feeling either raw and vulnerable or rigid and defensive, what we need most is lovingkindness. I exchanged my therapeutic sledgehammer for empathy, understanding, compassion, intuition and, of course, a strong set of therapeutic tools.
