I have heard these words countless times in my career and may even have said it myself!
What does this type of thinking tell us about ourselves? Will this mindset help us move toward our goals and potential?
The truth is that reasoning this way will more likely paralyze us or otherwise get in the way of our growth rather than help us to move forward.
What leads to us thinking in ways that put pressure on ourselves rather than self-acceptance, self-compassion, and positive encouragement? I’ll give you a clue… it starts with an ‘f’. Yes, you guessed it, fear is the culprit. Fear is a chameleon, masking itself into many forms and coloring our perception. Therefore we may be aware of subtle or not-so-subtle feelings of inner pressure, we may observe ourselves acting in self-sabotaging or self-limiting ways or, depending on our level of self-awareness, simply observe that we are going around in circles and not moving in the direction we aspire toward in life. Fear can even paralyze us from taking actions that will lead to achieving our potential. No matter what the cause, gently and non-judgementally identifying the root cause of what is holding us back is the beginning of the road toward healing and gaining freedom to thrive.
