Certain cues in a therapy session will lead me to take the client into guided imagery work. Inner imagery helps integrate dissociated or stuck parts in a person’s psyche. The imagery and meaning inherent in the sensations that arise in session can become gateways into the subconscious bringing about deeper understanding, integration, and connection to oneself.
“I feel tightness in my chest.”
“Yes, I understand that [x or y situation] would bring up such a sensation. How would you describe the blockage? Where is it? Does it have a shape? Does it have a consistency? A color? Would you like to give it a name?… Allow yourself to explore the black, heavy, amorphous blob in your chest and enquire into it … What is it doing there? Let’s give it a voice, what does it want to say? What does it need from you? What would you like to do with it?”
The guidance is spontaneous and situational, never scripted. Ultimately, the sensation will reveal its message which we can then integrate. Guided imagery is one of several different mind/body and psychospiritual techniques that help you liberate blocked energy and open up to the natural flow of life energy that arises from your deep, inner self.
